Cowbridge and the Vale of Glamorgan

Welcome to Cowbridge and the Vale of Glamorgan
A market town with a properly rural feel, within easy reach of the coast and Cardiff.
Cowbridge is what people picture when they say they want the country without giving anything up. The High Street is independent, the businesses are long established, and the people running them know their customers by name. Cardiff and the coast are both within easy reach. What surprises buyers is the housing. Behind a modest frontage you can find something far larger than you expected, and next to it a cottage, a converted building, or a house nobody has touched in forty years. The villages around the town are all different from one another. Matching a buyer to the right one is the part that takes local knowledge.
Section 01 — The market
CF71 has pulled away over the last decade. Land Registry data available in September 2026 shows detached homes in the postcode up around 91% over ten years, semi-detached up 84% and terraced up 80%. Those are area averages and they hide a wide spread. A village cottage, a modern detached house on the Darren Farm side and a converted period building in the town centre behave quite differently. I price on the evidence closest to your home, not on the CF71 average.
Section 02 — What to love
- An independent High Street of long-established businesses that know their customers
- Country in feel, with Cardiff and the coast both within easy reach
- Villages around the town that each have a different character
- Houses that are far bigger inside than the frontage suggests
- Cottages, conversions and period homes alongside substantial detached houses
- Schools with established reputations across the primary and secondary phases
Section 03 — Local lifestyle
Cowbridge is walkable and people use it that way. The High Street runs from Eastgate to Westgate, with the Blue Plaque Trail along it, while the Physic Garden sits behind a stone wall inside the medieval town. The Saturday farmers’ market runs behind The Bear, and Verity’s Court, down a cobbled lane off the High Street, brings together local makers. The River Thaw gives a quieter route through the centre. Most of what people need is here rather than in Cardiff, which is why weekends in Cowbridge tend to stay local. It is a small town and it works at that scale, which is much of the appeal.
Section 04 — Dining, entertainment & shopping
Cowbridge eats well for its size. The Bear anchors the High Street, while The Penny Farthing covers breakfast, brunch and afternoon tea. Fablas makes its ice cream on the High Street, and the Elephant and Bun adds specialist food and deli produce. The Saturday farmers’ market brings local producers into the centre, while just outside town the Hare and Hounds at Aberthin has built a strong reputation around local produce. The result is a food scene that feels independent and rooted in the Vale rather than interchangeable with anywhere else.
Section 05 — Things to do
Cowbridge received its borough charter in 1254, and the medieval layout still shapes the centre. The Physic Garden occupies the old Grammar School kitchen garden, with the Old Hall gardens beside it inside the town walls. The Blue Plaque Trail runs from Eastgate to Westgate and the River Thaw gives a short walk through town. Beyond Cowbridge, Dyffryn Gardens and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast are both within easy reach. The annual Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival is another part of the town’s identity.
Section 06 — Schools
School admissions and catchment areas can change. Buyers should confirm current arrangements directly with the relevant school and the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
